Prosthetic aftercare

Prosthetic aftercare

After you have received your new limb and have completed your initial reviews, you will continue to see your prosthetist on a yearly basis. These meetings will involve a discussion of any issues or difficulties that may have arisen whilst using your prosthesis. The prosthetist will check the condition of the skin on your residual limb to ensure that the socket is still fitting optimally. It will also be an opportunity to discuss how the limb is functioning for you in order for us to make fine adjustments. If you need to see a prosthetist in between appointments, then an appointment is always available. We have no waiting lists, so one of our prosthetists will be available to see you, even on short notice.

During these appointments we will ensure that your limb is functioning optimally and that everything is well with you and your prosthetic. We will send any components that have a manufacturer’s warranty for testing, and provide you with a replacement. We can also perform any renovation that you may require to keep your limb looking its best.

Aftercare - medical

After we have provided your new limb, we will schedule a regular program of aftercare. Most of our limb packages include an intensive period of physiotherapy and/or occupational therapy to help you use your new limb to its full capacity. You will also have regular review meetings with your prosthetist.

Lower limb

In your follow up appointments, your prosthetist will carry out an assessment of the skin and tissue quality of your residual limb and analyse your walking pattern to check alignment is still perfect and that you are moving in a way that is good for your body. The frequency of your visits will decrease as you get more used to using your limb and we are happy with the progress it is helping you to achieve.

After you have been discharged from your initial course of physiotherapy, you will continue to work with a physiotherapist, attending yearly sessions or more frequently if required. The physiotherapist will ensure that you are still using your limb efficiently and help you stay active by monitoring your balance and confidence. This will ensure that your new limb has a positive lifelong effect upon your lifestyle and will help you to keep your joints as healthy and pain free as possible. They can provide an ongoing service to address any phantom limb, limb or back pain you might encounter.

Should you require access to any other service, all of our multidisciplinary rehabilitation team are always available at short notice and without a waiting list. These include our rehabilitation consultant, prosthetists, orthotists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologist and personal trainer.

Upper limb

Your yearly prosthetics follow up will involve an inspection of your skin and tissue, as well as a check of your prosthesis. Your prosthetist will make sure that you are still able to use your limb, and that it is functioning exactly as it should be. You will be able to discuss your lifestyle and the changes you have experienced to help them ensure that the prosthesis is exceeding your expectations.

It may be beneficial to continue to work with an occupational therapist, either to continue to increase your functionality, or to make sure that you are able to continue to use your limb optimally. This is likely to be especially useful if you have a long established amputation or congenital limb absence and are very used to functioning with one arm or hand.

A regular appointment will be scheduled on at least a yearly basis with a physiotherapist who will monitor the effects of the new limb upon your body. They will give you advice to improve your posture and help you to avoid muscle imbalances. They can work with our personal trainers to ensure that you can participate in sport and achieve your aims.

Should you require access to any other service, all of our multidisciplinary rehabilitation team are always available at short notice and without a waiting list. These include our rehabilitation consultant, prosthetists, orthotists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologist and personal trainer.
